Cutting down on caffeine

Last year in June I went on a small road trip with two friends. I’ll just never forget the persistent headache on day two.

I’ve had those headaches before. Often times after the first night in a new place. It builds up during the day. And it’s gone in a few minutes after I drink a cup of coffee. So usually it’s not a big deal, because you always pack coffee for a trip, right?

Well, this time I didn’t. I learned how dependent I was on caffeine and decided that day that I needed to change that. It took me a while to actually execute the plan, I mean, I really like coffee, but on 16 December I started tallying the number of cups per day. I’ve been doing that since that day and I can tell you that I’m now totally fine without the caffeine spikes that coffee would give me.

Here’s my coffee weaning schedule.

Note that I started replacing my regular coffee with decaf (d). At some point the decafs gained the upper hand up until the point there were no more regular coffees in play.

It feels like an accomplishment. It’s also a great reminder that you can change habits.

The road trip was awesome and we had great fun in the Eifel area. I eventually drank away the headache with some coffee at a gas station. I’m looking forward to a new edition of the road trip where I don’t have to worry about caffeine shots.
