A year of e-biking

Buying an e-bike was one of my best decisions in a long time. Using my e-bike to commute was my best.

I remember thinking about cycling to the office for quite some time. Yet, I could always find another excuse not to do it. At some point the connecting tunnel was closed for 3 weeks in the summer holiday period. I worked from home, cycled once or twice, but also borrowed my mum’s e-bike to commute for a couple of times. That’s where the seed was planted.

Half a year later, after convincing myself in the spring break, I bought my own e-bike. On Tuesday the 27th of February 2024 I e-biked to work, which turned out to be the starting point of not only a new routine, but also a flywheel for positivity.

I simply feel better when I cycle. It gives me energy and it allows me to be alone with just my thoughts. In the beginning I listened to podcasts or radio, like I would do in my car, but for a while it has been just me time now. What a treat! It vaguely reminds me of my youth, where I just always cycled to friends, thinking of stories and things to do. Simple times.

On March 5th 2025 I’d clocked almost 4200 kilometers. With 36 kilometers per day, a work week of 4 days and some occasional remote work, I figure I worked around 175 times in the office. I used my bicycle roughly 115 times. I didn’t do these maths before, nor do I track my daily activities, but I feel proud knowing around 65% of my commute has been with my e-bike.

The positive flywheel makes that I’m now thinking of a little more exercise and taking my non-battery powered bicycle out the shed more often. I prepped that bicycle the past couple of weeks and used it once now. Let’s see what the odometer tells me this time next year.
